Mark another one on the chalkboard, Mazda is removing the manual transmission options from the 2019 Mazda 6 mid-sized sedan.

This is only the most recent in a slew of automakers making the same decision. Just last month, a Subaru executive warned folks at the Geneva Motor Show that manuals don't align with the company's mission.

That leaves only two Mazda models left to support the transmission option, the Mazda 3 hatchback with Premium trim and the MX-5 Miata. If you're dying for a mid-sized sedan with manual transmission, the only option left on the market is the Honda Accord. Honda still offers the option to their vehicles as a 6-speed manual or as a 10-speed automatic.

The Mazda 6 will also see a $1,875 price hike, raising the final tag to $24,720. It's not for no reason, however. The 2019 model will introduce a number of new safety features, such as the rain-sensing wipers and G-Vectoring Control Plus handling system. Consider that with the cost of an automatic transmission and the price is more or less the same.

The way I see it, electric models will overtake gas cars eventually. And since there's no such thing as a manual electric, the transmission option is on borrowed time no matter what.
