Oliver Schmidt, Volkswagen's head of the United States regulatory compliance office from 2014 to 2015, is expected to plead guilty next month. He has been detained since his arrest earlier this year and has been charged with 11 felonies. These charges include various wire fraud, as well as conspiracy to defraud the government. Add up the charges and he's looking at a hefty 169 years in prison.

I don't know how likely it is that he will actually receive 169 years, seeing as how that time is enough for almost two full life sentences, but I guess we will see what happens. We know that Schmidt it planning on a guilty plea, probably in an attempt to get a plea bargain out of the deal to shorten to the sentence.

The plea date is currently set for 9:30 a.m. on August 4, and while he does plan on pleading guilty, we don't know if he will only be pleading guilty for certain charges or all 11. This makes Schmidt the eighth of the former and current Volkswagen executives who have been criminally charged for the Dieselgate scandal. VW has spent over $25 billion to settle both civil and criminal cases that are linked with the diesel emissions issues.
