While everyone else is trying to figure out the best electric powertrain, Ferrari is looking to improve what they already have. The automaker has recently filed a patent for a new 4-cylinder combustion engine.

First discovered by Autoguide, Ferrari filed a new patent on January 17 with the European Patent Office. This included a diagram, which shows a 4-cylinder engine with an exhaust driven turbine that charges an electric generator. The electricity made from this is then used to spin a compressor in the intake to feed more air into the engine.

The patent also claims there is an auditory benefit alongside the power-boosting capabilities. This is reportedly done by altering the intensity of regeneration in the generator. This isn't entirely unlike how electric cars can alter their brake energy regeneration systems.

Right now, there is no word as to which vehicles might come with this new engine. It's possible that they have no plans, but want to protect their design from theft.
