There are few things in the automotive industry more elegant than an early Ferrari. Fortunately for us, the very automaker has introduced a new pair of vehicles based on the 812 superfast: the Monza SP1 and SP2.

SP stands for Special Projects, Ferrari's in-house coachbuilder. The numbers indicate the number of seats. But both vehicles are fantastic speedsters that mix retro design with modern technology. They'll be a rare breed, as well, since only 500 examples are planned for production.

The two models were presented publicly at Maranello, Italy at the Ferrari headquarters on Monday. Loyal customers were given an early showing. So odds are all 500 examples are already accounted for.

The platform is primarily aluminum, with a full carbon fiber body. To maintain the sport styling of the design, much of the cabin is built using the same material. Throw in some wonderfully efficient weight reduction and lowered gravitational center, and you have a balanced sports car with almost no chance of rolling.

Such precautions are almost necessary, given the power sitting behind them. Each vehicle comes with a 6.5-liter V-12 engine pushing nearly 800 horsepower and 530 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels using a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Ferrari marks the official specs at 2 mph in 2.9 seconds and 124 mph in 7.9 seconds.

Don't worry if you missed your chance. Ferrari claims that this is only the beginning of a new series called Icona. With no secret that it's aimed at collectors, the line will draw inspiration from the classic era of cars.

While the Monzas are likely sold out, Ferrari says the cars are just the first in a new and very exclusive series called Icona. These will draw inspiration from the most evocative Ferraris of the 1950s and are more than likely destined to be future classics. Ferrari makes no qualms about the cars being aimed at collectors.
